Annotated Bibliography

Topic:

            Visa Revocation on International Students

Summary:

The topic of my bibliography is visa revocation on international students across the country. I chose this topic because it’s one of the trending topics that are being spread by media across the country because there are students who are getting their visas revoked for no apparent reason. Based on these actions, it makes them more prone to getting deported based on the new immigration laws that are being established by President Donald Trump. As a result, many international students live in fear and panic because they worry that one day, immigration will come to their campus and look for them so they can get deported back to their country of origin. Throughout my research, I found an example of a student called Mohsen Mahdawi who attends Columbia University, and he had his visa revoked and arrested by immigration officers after attending a US citizenship appointment. This was the specific event which I am focusing on because it can relate to other students later and I feel like this was a good example to use to spread the word about what’s going around the country.

Source 1:

Ma, Annie. “More than 1,000 International Students Have Had Visas or Legal Status Revoked.” AP News, AP News, 18 Apr. 2025, apnews.com/article/f1-visa-international-college-student-trump-9d4d900d328a0c205503c1178e70f1d5.

The author Annie Ma is a national education reporter who covers K-12 education in the country, and she works for the Associated Press. The overall message of this article is to give information on how many students have had their visa revoked for no apparent reason. The number is to be estimated to be more than 1,000 students across the country. The intended audience is to the people in the country who should be aware of the current situation in which international students are going through and to I form the people that students are getting their visa revoked and are now in risk of getting deported due to the new laws which Donald Trump has established. The genre is a news article, and it gives a clear data map which shows which states have been affected by the recent visa revocations. This will allow me to inform the people on which states are being targeted and what could happen if you were to get your visa revoked if you’re an international student. The source is very reliable because they have given clear facts and data that prove the students are going through these events. I will only need to read more about what the law says but it seems like they have covered a bit of it but it’s mostly basic rights you have in the country.

Yam, Kimmy, and Chloe Atkins. “Visa Revocations Can Now Lead to Legal Status Terminations, According to Internal Memo.” NBCNews.Com, NBCUniversal News Group, 29 Apr. 2025, www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/visa-revocations-legal-status-terminations-ice-rcna203562.

The authors in this article are Kimmy Yam which is an Asian American reporter that works for NBC News and focuses on race, politics, and cultures. The second author is Chloe Atkinson who is also a NBC news reporter for national security and law unit. The overall message in this article is that they are explaining the rise of power that ICE has in the country because now they can terminate visas for small reasons which seem to be very minimal. Being unemployed for a long period of time can get your visa revoked or even committing a small crime like a driving infraction can get your visa revoked. The intended audience is the international students or people who are here on visas because they are given information on stuff they should not do so they can avoid getting their visa revoked. The genre is a newspaper article, and I feel like using the same layout as a news article will help me do my job easier but also, I can use the facts such as actions to take or avoid if you are here on a visa. The source is reliable because NBC has always been a good source to follow. Plus, it has all the information such as numbers and actual laws which were established by the government in which people must follow or avoid. Overall, this is a great source to state facts in my project.

Singh, Shashank. “Visa Revocations Rise for International Students in the US.” VisaVerge, 20 May 2025, www.visaverge.com/visa/visa-revocations-rise-for-international-students-in-the-us/.

The author of this article is Shashank Singh who is a news reporter for Visa Verge and is dedicated to releasing important news immediately. The overall message of this article is that there have been massive changes in individuals who have visas. There have been over 300 visa revocations. There have been arrests on individuals who have broken the law and are being seen as a threat to the nation. The intended audience is the people of the U.S and foreigners who are here in the U.S with a visa because they are at risk. The genre is also a newspaper, and it can also benefit me in trying to find the ideal layout of my newspaper. To add on, I can also add bulletin points to my newspaper which talks about SEVIS record which track the students activity in the country. The source seems to be reliable because it has similar information as the other sources, but this one introduced me into a new topic which is SEVIS, and it seems to be very interesting, and it can be something new I can add on my paper.

Source 4:

Chernikoff, Sara, and Borresen, Jennifer. “How Many International Students Had Their Legal Status Changed? Maps Show Trump’s Impact.” USA Today, Gannett Satellite Information Network, 3 May 2025, www.usatoday.com/story/graphics/2025/05/03/how-many-international-students-visas-revoked/83216625007/.

The author in this article is Sara Chernikoff and she is a data and graphic reporter for USA today and she was also a journalist. The second author is Jennifer Borresen who is also a journalist for USA today. The overall message of this article is that President Donald Trump has restored back the visas of hundreds of students and but mostly talks about visa revocations and it goes more into the numbers of how many students had their visa revoked and what the population was. The genre is a newspaper but with more of an analytical newspaper which talks mostly about numbers and statistics. The intended audience is the people of the nation to see which population is being affected the most on these revocations. In his case, the graph bars and population count will help me see which group of people have been affected the most and in this case, it looks like Indian people are the group who have more international students. With this information I can set my focus on the Indian population and how they have been dealing with this. The source is incredibly reliable because it has real numbers on everything and it’s not just paragraphs of the same information. We have new information and valuable numbers which would please the people.

Source 5:

Fadel, Leila, and Johnson, Jan, and Kline, Kaity. “Mohsen Mahdawi – the Columbia Student Arrested at His Citizenship Appointment – Speaks.” NPR, NPR, 29 Apr. 2025, www.npr.org/2025/04/29/nx-s1-537 7484/columbia-student-mohsen-mahdawi-citizenship-arrest.

The author of this article is Leila Fidel which is a host for Morning Edition and and NPR podcast member. The second author is Jan Johnson, which doesn’t really have any information about him. The third author is Kaity Kline who is an assistant producer for Morning Edition and Up First. The overall message of this article is to give out information on Mohsen Mahdawi who was arrested in Vermont during his U.S citizenship appointment. There is no reason on why he was taking into custody and arrested but, it’s a huge problem which has the U.S in shambles. The genre is a newspaper which has an intended audience towards the people of the U.S who are unaware of the current situation in which international students are going through. The main idea which I will gather from this source is the events which led to the arrest of Mohsen. This will allow me to explain the process he went through and also give more information to international people on what could happen if they were to get arrested by immigration officials.

Source 6:

Poux, Sabine. “Mohsen Mahdawi Released from Prison While Immigration Proceedings Continue.” Vermont Public, 1 May 2025, www.vermontpublic.org/local-news/2025-04-30/mohsen-mahdawi-released-from-prison-while-immigration-proceedings-continue.

The author of this article is Sabine Poux and she is a reporter/producer who has worked for NPR and is now with Brave Little State. The overall message of this article is to announce the release of Mohsen Mahdawi from immigration authorities. Mohsen was allowed to get released due to the judge ordering his release. The genre is also a newspaper which intends to inform the students of the nation who were worried about Mohsen. The purpose is to show that freedom will always be granted to those who have not done wrong and there is always justice in the U.S. I can use this article to explain the process in which Mohsen went through because my focus is mostly on him but, this will also give hope to the poem of the nation because international people see how we also have justice in here although sometimes it may not seem like it. This source would be mildly reliable because it gave us information right on the day he got out and it’s also from Vermont which is where Mohsen got taken into custody. This would be very helpful in demonstrating how justice was served and how the U.S laws protect everyone inside the country.
